Beach Report 1/30/2023

Darla & I are still at Gulf State Park in Alabama. Darla went looking for a bobcat on Bobcat Trail. No luck. But she was excited — she was barking and carrying on — I think the whole park heard her.

But the big news of the day was the fog. It was crazy. The beach was so foggy all day. It started last night and is going straight through until tomorrow. And when I say foggy I mean FOGGY. I lost Darla in the fog a few times. As Yukon Cornelius says “this fog is as thick as peanut butter.”

The surf was pounding a bit. Swells were 3.5 feet this am but not much wind.

When we got home Darla wanted to watch The Fog on tv. But alas, we would have had to pay for it — so no scary movie about ocean fog.

High tide was at 5:38 am and low tide 5:41 pm. The Gulf of Mexico has only one high and one low tide per day. That is a diurnal tide. Most places have semi-diurnal tides meaning 2 high and 2 lows in a day.

Places with 2 high & 2 low tides are shown in red
Places with diurnal tides shown in yellow

Diurnal tides are not the norm. I had no idea 🤷‍♂️
